1 year

Ok. The kid is a year old, I really need to get this thing updated.  But how long has it been…?  There’s a LOT to update on!

Today we went for his 1 year check up at the pediatrician. He’s as healthy as a kid can get. His weight is spot on, he’s still taller than average. I am happy to say that he is a VORACIOUS eater and really not the slightest bit picky. I feel confident that he won’t get to be all that picky – I believe in the power of quality food, of him seeing where his food comes from, and of the fact that, from day 1, he eats what WE eat.  There’s too much evil marketing out there, trying to convince parents & kids that they need special foods made just for them – COLORFUL food!  FUN food!  Food loaded with sugar!

No, thank you.  Today, for lunch, he ate leftover sweet potato and chorizo soup with a dollop of creme fraiche. (I’d made the soup a couple nights ago – the chorizo is from Thundering Hooves, where I get all of our meat – all grass fed and pastured and everything else was from the farmer’s market.) Everything he’s eaten so far has been from a farm or farmer’s market. And it will stay that way.

Last night, for dinner, he had some of our chicken and leek stroganoff; for breakfast he usually eats oatmeal or kamut with raw honey, a dollop of greek yogurt and some fruit (I have tons of blueberries, raspberries, peaches, stored in the freezer from the summer farmer’s markets.)  And he loves my white bean soup with kale.  KALE!  How many kids do YOU know that eat kale?

Because he eats so much & because it’s such a variety, including plenty of proteins, we’re going to stop giving him goat milk and start sharing my raw cow milk with him – but not nearly as frequently as before.  Quite frankly, he’s been losing interest in his bottles, anyway.
